OKI Digital Imaging Corporation
OKI contributed to the research in the advanced plant factory at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology by its LED light source device.
- Offering the high luminance LED light source device based on the original LED technology -

OKI Data (President & CEO Harushige Sugimoto, Minato-ku, Tokyo) , an OKI Group company specializing in the printer business, and OKI Digital Imaging (President & CEO Mitsuhiko Ogihara, Takasaki-city, Gunma) have offered LED light source device to Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology for Advanced Plant Factory Research Institute of Department of Life Science and Biotechnology(President Tadashi Matsunaga, Fuchu-city, Tokyo). The institute has been selected as a recipient of "Federal funding of advanced plant factory research institute" by Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry in 2009.

The goal of this institute is the management of plant factory that enables to expect profitability and stable supply of blueberries while its supply is scarce for its demand. The research aims the increased yield of approximately six times larger than the current value. In recent years, usage of LED has been receiving high expectation in the management of plant factories that can provide stable supplies of high quality products without using any pesticide because the electricity takes up a large percentage of the running cost of such factories. LED light source device used for plant factories needs to have high luminance to achieve high yield and high quality (large-fruit /high sugar content /high antioxidant effect). Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology was therefore looking for a manufacturer with the ability to produce high luminance LED light source device.

OKI Digital Imaging developed LED light source device that enables irradiation from low luminance to high luminance (0~3000µmol m-2 s-1) that effectively combines blue, green, red, and infrared of LED depending on the growth of blueberries. Especially red and blue LED wavelengths match with the peak absorption level of chlorophyll, and also improve photosynthesis for increased yield, and increase the content of anthocyanin(*1) of fruits.
This LED light source device developed by OKI Digital Imaging needed a high mounting technology of LED by considering effectively releasing heat in order to achieve high luminance. It is also important to build a free control system that controls LED color and brightness depending on the growth process and time of plants. OKI Digital Imaging made it possible to create an LED light source device that is perfect for an advanced plant factory based on its original technology that has been cultivated through the development of LED Print head, the light source for exposure made for printer makers such as OKI over the years.
OKI Group will continue our contributions for research developments that use advanced technologies by cooperating with universities and research institutes.
Glossary
- *1:anthocyanin
Anthocyanins are water-soluble pigments that may appear red, blue, or purple, contributing to describe color of flowers and fruits. They belong to a parent class of molecules called flavonoids, known as antioxidants.
